Kedarnath Yatra Guide — Helicopter vs Trekking Route

Kedarnath is the most demanding — and for many pilgrims the most rewarding — of the Char Dham shrines. The temple sits at about 3,580 m in the upper Mandakini valley, and there are two ways to reach it: on foot, or by helicopter. Here’s an honest comparison to help you choose.

BeOnd tip: Whether you trek or take the helicopter, pack a rain layer even in peak season — Kedarnath weather can turn in under an hour.

Option 1: The Trek

The walking route starts at Gaurikund and climbs roughly 16–18 km to the temple, gaining serious altitude along the way. Most pilgrims take 6–9 hours up, depending on fitness and halts.

• Support options: ponies, palkis (palanquins) and pitthus (porters) are available at Gaurikund at board-fixed rates — no trekking fitness required if you use them.
• Facilities en route: tea stalls, small eateries, medical posts and resting shelters at regular intervals.
• The reward: the walk itself is part of the pilgrimage — waterfalls, the Mandakini roaring below, and the first sight of the temple against the snow peaks is unforgettable.

Best for: reasonably fit pilgrims who want the full yatra experience and have a spare day in the itinerary.

Option 2: The Helicopter

Helicopter shuttles operate from helipads in the Guptkashi–Phata–Sirsi belt, cutting the journey to a few minutes each way. Bookings are made through the official IRCTC HeliYatra portal — book early, as peak-season slots sell out almost immediately after opening. Beware of unofficial agents reselling tickets at inflated prices.

• Flights are weather-dependent — morning slots are the most reliable, and delays or cancellations do happen in the hills.
• Baggage is strictly limited (a small bag per person), and passenger weight is recorded at booking.
• From the Kedarnath helipad it’s a short walk to the temple.

Best for: senior citizens, families with small children, anyone with health conditions, or pilgrims on a tight schedule.

Darshan & Staying Overnight

The temple opens for darshan in the early morning and holds evening aarti — exact timings vary by season, and queues are longest mid-morning in peak season. If your schedule allows, staying overnight near the temple (GMVN cottages and basic guesthouses) lets you attend both evening aarti and early-morning darshan before the day crowds arrive — many pilgrims call this the highlight of their entire yatra. Nights are cold year-round; carry proper warm layers.

Best Time to Go

• May – mid-June: peak season — book helicopters and rooms well in advance
• September – October: clear post-monsoon skies and fewer crowds; colder
• Avoid the monsoon months (July–August): trail and flight disruptions are common
