Mata Vaishno Devi in the Trikuta hills of Jammu is one of India’s most visited shrines — and one of the best-organised. With the right preparation, it’s a comfortable yatra for all ages, from children to grandparents. Here’s everything you need to know.
Step 1: The Yatra Registration (RFID Card)
Every pilgrim needs a free RFID yatra card issued by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. You can register online through the Shrine Board’s official website (recommended — choose your date and start time) or at the registration counters in Katra with a valid photo ID. The card is scanned at checkpoints along the track, so keep it accessible throughout. Registration is completely free — never pay an agent for it.
The Routes: Traditional vs Tarakote Marg
The climb from Katra to Bhawan is about 12–13 km. There are two walking routes:
- Traditional route (via Banganga and Ardhkuwari): the classic path — busier, lined with shops, refreshment stalls and shelters the whole way. Passes the sacred Ardhkuwari cave (separate queue for the cave darshan).
- Tarakote Marg: the newer, wider path — gentler gradients, cleaner and less crowded, designed for a calmer walk. It merges with the main route before Bhawan.
Many families climb via Tarakote Marg and descend by the traditional route to visit Ardhkuwari on the way down.
If You’d Rather Not Walk
- Ponies, palkis and pitthus — available at Katra at board-regulated rates
- Battery car — covers a section of the upper track (limited seats, book early at the counter)
- Helicopter — Katra to Sanjhichhat, followed by a short 2–3 km walk to Bhawan; book only through the Shrine Board’s official portal, and well in advance for weekends and holidays
- Ropeway to Bhairon Temple — from Bhawan, the darshan traditionally concludes at Bhairon Baba temple, now easily reached by ropeway
Best Time to Visit
- March – June and September – October: pleasant weather, ideal for walking
- Navratri (spring and autumn): the most vibrant time — but expect the biggest crowds and book everything early
- December – January: cold but beautifully quiet; carry serious winter wear
- Monsoon months are workable (the track is sheltered in stretches) but slippery — walk carefully
Packing Essentials
- Comfortable walking shoes — the single most important item
- A light jacket (evenings are cool even in summer), cap and water bottle
- Original photo ID + your RFID yatra card
- Minimal luggage — lockers are available at Bhawan for bags, phones and cameras (not allowed inside the sanctum)
Yatra Tips
- Start the climb late evening or early morning — the track is lit all night, the walk is cooler, and you can take darshan before the morning rush.
- Keep 2 nights in Katra so the yatra never feels rushed.
- Combine it with Amritsar (Golden Temple, Wagah Border) — the combination our pilgrims love most, and exactly how our 4N/5D package is designed.
