The Char Dham Yatra — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath — is the most sacred pilgrimage circuit in the Indian Himalayas. Done right, it’s a deeply moving 9–11 day journey; done unprepared, it can be exhausting. This guide covers the route, registration, best time and preparation, based on the yatras we plan every season.
The Route
The traditional yatra runs west to east, starting ex-Haridwar or Rishikesh:
- Yamunotri — via Barkot; the shrine is reached by a roughly 6 km trek from Janki Chatti (ponies and palkis available)
- Gangotri — via Uttarkashi; the temple is right at the roadhead, no trek required
- Kedarnath — via Guptkashi; the toughest leg, with a long uphill trek from Gaurikund (or a helicopter shuttle — see our Kedarnath guide)
- Badrinath — fully motorable; the temple is a short walk from town
A comfortable road itinerary is 9 nights / 10 days with overnight stays at Barkot, Uttarkashi, Guptkashi and Badrinath — exactly how our group departures are structured.
When Does the Yatra Open?
The temples open around late April / early May (dates are announced each year around Akshaya Tritiya) and close around Diwali / Bhai Dooj (October–November). The best windows are:
- May – mid-June: pleasant weather, all facilities running — the most popular window
- Mid-September – October: post-monsoon clarity, thinner crowds, colder nights
- Avoid July – August if you can: monsoon brings landslides and road delays in the hills
Registration Is Mandatory
The Uttarakhand government requires yatra registration for every pilgrim, done online through the official state tourism portal (or at physical counters en route). You’ll need ID proof and your travel dates. Registration is free — beware of agents charging for it. When you travel with us, we complete the registration for the whole group as part of the package.
Health & Altitude Preparation
- The shrines sit at high altitude — Kedarnath and Badrinath are both above 3,000 m. Ascend gradually and keep the first days light.
- Start daily walking practice 3–4 weeks before the yatra, especially for the Yamunotri and Kedarnath treks.
- Senior citizens or anyone with heart/BP/respiratory conditions should take a doctor’s clearance — and consider helicopter options for Kedarnath.
- Carry personal medicines, ORS and any prescriptions; pharmacies in the upper stretches are basic.
What to Pack
- Layered warm clothing even in summer — nights are cold at altitude, and weather changes fast
- Good walking shoes with grip, raincoat/poncho, cap and sunscreen
- Torch, power bank, water bottle and dry snacks for road days
- Original ID (carried at all times), registration slips, and a small daypack for trek days
Cost
Our complete road package — 9 nights / 10 days ex-Haridwar at ₹87,000 for 2 persons — includes hotels at Barkot, Uttarkashi, Guptkashi and Badrinath, transport throughout, and yatra registration support. Next group departure: 25th August 2026.
